Professional Associations, Literature, and Resources

Below is a list of helpful links to professional associations and their related publications pertaining to teaching art in higher education.

Association for Art History
Based in the UK, this organization pertains to art history. Their web site features some resources for teaching art history. Their peer-reviewed journal is aptly entitled Art History.
College Art Association
This organization has nearly 14,000 members and their two peer-reviewed journals are Art Bulletin and Art Journal. Their web site has a terrific index of affiliated organizations, as well as a blog containing news related to art in higher education entitled College Art Association News.

This database is mainly used by Education majors, but could be helpful to you in preparing to teach an art class at the college level.

Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE)
FATE is dedicated to fostering professional development for teaching foundation-level art courses. They have a wiki for posting assignments for classes; additionally, they have a presence on Facebook which serves as a blog. The peer-reviewed publication for FATE is entitled FATE in Review.
Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT)
This page can be helpful in finding lesson plans, Creative Commons Licensed or public domain textbooks, or other educational objects for topics within art.
National Art Education Association (NAEA)
The NAEA consists of nearly 20,000 members and supports the professional development of art educators from grades K-12 as well as higher education. Their web site provides a wealth of information in these areas, such as lesson plans, video excerpts from conferences, tools for advocacy, a resource library (serves more as a bibliography with links to purchase resources), and more. Their peer-reviewed publication is entitled Studies in Art Education.
